The Day of Defenders of the Fatherland is celebrated in Kazakhstan on May 7.

Did you wonder why May 7?

What happened on this day?

Maybe the great Kazakh batyrs won some kind of historic victory over the Jungars? Or Amangeldy’s emancipating forces heroically died on this day? Or was there a turning point in the World War II on that day?

No. It is just on this day in 1992 that some clerk of the Administration of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan decided to bring to the head of state the documents that accumulated for the long May holidays for signature. Why not later, in June, for example? It is possible that in June this clerk planned to go on vacation and therefore did not want to leave the unfinished documents on his desk.

Do not you think it’s absurd to celebrate public holidays on the day of signing a decree or law on the establishment or approval of something? Signing a document is just a bureaucratic procedure. Its last stage in the form of a signature of the president of the country or the chairman of parliament does not carry any meaningful significance. So why adhere to the date of signing the document?

Because of this stupid tradition, we have the third big holiday in Mat between May 1 and 9 and almost half a month we do not work.

Would not it be more rational to postpone the Day of Defenders of the Motherland on another day, tied to significant historical events, and convenient from the practical side?
